10/2/24- Do Good Works

Are you a doer?

It is much easier to speak your beliefs than it is to put them into action. At least I find that I struggle with push back from within myself. I want to help as an initial reaction, but also feel a bit derailed when it causes me to move around my schedule or change my plans. Times of need and desperation often do not come at a time that fits right into our planned schedule. Disasters usually come in their own timing and leave many with needs that they are not able to meet without aid.

In 1992, my husband and I lived in Asheville, when 2 feet of snow fell in a very short time span. It was a heavy wet snow, which caused power outages. The temperatures were freezing, and we had no way to heat our little apartment. Passing the time, we played cards with our neighbors by candlelight. It was kind of exciting the first night, but by morning, we were ready to venture out and walk to the Red Cross. They had a room full of cots, but not enough beds to house all those without power, especially those with small kids and babies. Thankfully, our neighbors had friends from their church who offered to come pick us up and take us to their home, where we slept in the basement on blankets. We were thankful for the food and a warm home to spend those few days until we could return to our apartment.

Fast forward 32 years and Asheville is in an even worse state from a natural disaster. The city is completely cut off with bridges and roads swept away from the excess water and debris propelled by the large amounts of rain that fell at rapid rates due to hurricane Helene. The city is without power, internet, cell, gas and food rations.

Please pray for all those impacted by this natural disaster. If you are able, please donate money or supplies. I know some organizations and churches have teams lined up to go assist in the cleanup and restoration of some of these areas hit and impacted by the hurricane. If you are able, please help with the efforts in the capacity that you are able.

James 1: 25

“ But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”
