7/10/24- Good Night's Slumber

Updated: Jul 11

How much better are you able to function after a good night's sleep?

Sleep is such a necessity. It's amazing how much a good night sleep can restore your mind and body. Waking after a good night's sleep, you wake feeling restored and ready to tackle the day. Monday's are also such a productive day following Sunday's restful day.

There are so many sleepless nights as a new Mom or new parent. Adjusting to having a new life enter into your home and live’s is a big life change. There are many consecutive years while raising children where both parents or at least one parent is sleep deprived. I would say it was a good five years for me, and then I begged for one more baby. Fortunately, our third child was sleeping pretty well after one and a half years.

There are other influences that can impact your sleep too. A busy or stressful job can cause you to wake in the night thinking about what needs to be completed the next day or on a project. The best solution I found for this was to write down a to do list before leaving the office, or before bedtime or in the middle of the night (if you didn't make the list prior to bedtime). I remember many nights when my life was super busy planning carpools, driving kids and co-ordinating trips to the grocery store and meal prep when I would dream about my grocery list. This actually was almost comical.

Decisions made on a good night sleep are typically more sound decisions. Your mood is often better too. You are able to handle more distractions and noise without blowing a gasket. This usually helps insure that you won't hurt a loved one or friend with harsh words which frees up your time and mind space from having to right a wrong in your relationship.

So much of your day and life can be impacted by not sleeping enough. I believe this is such a reminder for how a human, Jesus, is God and did not succum to temptation to sin. Even while He was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights with no food and limited sleep, He did not sin. I believe only God who was in human form could withstand temptations under these circumstances. Although God’s word reminds us of how important it is to walk with God and to restore your body with good sleep or a good slumber, as I like to say.

Psalm 127: 1- 2

“Unless the Lord builds the house,

They labor in vain who builds it;

Unless the Lord guards the city,

The watchman stays awake in vain.

It is vain for you to rise early,

To sit up late,

To eat the bread of sorrow;

For so He gives His beloved sleep.”
