2/20/24- Learn from Me

Updated: Feb 22

Matthew 11: 28- 30 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

God calls us to work, but He does not want us to feel burdened. He wants us to learn from Him. If we walk with Him our load will be easy and His burden light.

I have always been a hard worker. And I enjoyed working hard most of the time. At 10 years old I started morning swim practices. I would wake at 4:50 am and dive into a cold pool at 5:30 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

I showed promise at a young age to be a world-class swimmer. My coaches and parents believed that this was the path to becoming an elite swimmer. Mostly because they lacked knowledge.

I get that working hard is needed to achieve success. However, a body must grow and soft tissues must be established in order for a body to get strong enough to endure the grueling practice schedule that swimmers abide by.

Most of what I subjected my body to, in hopes of achieving success in my sport, started at too early an age. I began lifting weights at 13 years old. This resulted in tendonitis in my left shoulder after about a month of lifting. Because we trusted (me and my parents) in a young coach who simply wanted to grow talent, I had a swim career riddled with injury and pain.

My experiences with my swimming career provided me with the wisdom to guide my own children throughout their swim careers.

I was able to make knowledgeable choices for them. Making different choices than what our coach sometimes wanted, allowed my oldest two kids to achieve elite-level swimming with very few injuries.

Walking through life is hard work. We must work smart so that we can complete our tasks. God calls us to rely on Him to make the best choices for our lives and therefore, not be burdened. God provides wisdom for us throughout our lives to help make our burdens light. He wants us to enjoy the journey. Thankful for God’s guidance and that He walks with me in this life.
